Moderate Sedation (formerly known as Oral Conscious   Sedation)

For people who avoid dentists like the plague, sedation dentistry may take away some of their anxiety. Sedation can be used for everything from more involved procedures to a simple cleaning. How it’s used depends on the severity of the fear.

Sedation is especially helpful to children who are terrified of the dentist or are too young to understand or cooperate during the visit. The California State’s dental board carefully regulates the use of sedation techniques. Dentists are required to hold permits in order to perform sedation. Dr. Sheng is certified in sedation dentistry, and has been practicing sedation dentistry since 2001.

Sedation dentistry may also be appropriate for people who

  • have a low pain threshold
  • can’t sit still in the dentist’s chair
  • have very sensitive teeth
  • have a bad gag reflex
  • need a large amount of dental work completed
